What’s Missing from your (Christian) ID?

I’m writing this weekly newsletter on issues related to discipleship, digital ministry, and “Front Yard Mission.” I hope you find it helpful!

Recently I got one of those “REAL IDs” during my driver’s license renewal. That’s the one with the little gold star in the corner. (Haven’t we all been chasing the gold star since kindergarten?) Eventually we’ll all need these to fly and who knows what else. It doesn’t look much different from previous licenses, but without the special hologram and whatnot, my ID would have been incomplete.

In the same way, many Christians are often missing a crucial piece of our Christian identity. And it keeps us from going where God wants to take us. What do I mean? Consider how we describe ourselves. In the age of social media, we have become pretty good at using short, pithy words or phrases in our bios. Our favorite digital platforms place a premium on conveying who we are in as succinct (and clever) a way as possible. And when we do, many of us include something about our faith: “Christ-follower.” “Disciple.” “Son (or Daughter) of the King.” And of course, “Christian.” Which is great!

How do you describe your Christian identity?

You could choose many other biblical descriptors:

  • Child of God (John 1:12)
